The University of Toledo conferred its first bachelor's degrees in neuroscience on May 2, marking a milestone for a program that has become one of the institution's fastest-expanding majors since launching in spring 2023, with roughly 80 students now enrolled.

The neuroscience B.S. was conceived in 2017 by Dr. David Giovannucci, director of the Raymond & Beverly Sackler Laboratory for Neuroendocrine Tumor Research, and Dr. Bruce Bamber, chair of biological sciences. The two set out to build a curriculum that distinguished itself from traditional biology-and-psychology programs by integrating a medical component. The proposal moved through faculty working groups, both colleges, the Provost's Office and the Board of Trustees before receiving final approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education in 2022.

Graduates from UToledo's inaugural bachelor's degree program in neuroscience pose on stage with Dr. David Giovannucci at the May 2 commencement ceremony.

"The graduating students in the first cohort are passionate, outstanding scholars who forged strong friendships and excelled in a curriculum grounded in both neuroscience principles and their clinical implications for human health," Giovannucci said. "It was an honor to help prepare these students for success in their applications to graduate, medical and other health professions programs."

Six of the 10 graduates will continue at UToledo this fall - five entering the M.D. program and one entering the neurosciences Ph.D. program - a placement rate that Bamber said reflects the program's intentional design.

"The new neuroscience major let these students make the most of their potential by combining the strengths of academics and research on UToledo's main and medical campuses into a single cohesive program," Bamber said. "The high success rates for placing students into medical school and graduate school upon graduation underscore the value and effectiveness of this program."
