FirstBank Names Huntsville Native J.E.P. Buchanan as Market President

Community bank champions industry veteran and local leader to drive growth across North Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, AL. (Oct. 8, 2025) - FirstBank today announced that John Edward Propst "J.E.P." Buchanan has been named Market President in Huntsville. In his new role, Buchanan will lead the local teams in providing current and prospective customers with a comprehensive array of financial products and services, ensuring that the decisions remain rooted in the success of the communities they serve.

An industry veteran with a 35-year banking career, Buchanan has held numerous leadership roles including Chief Credit Officer, Senior Lender, and Market President. Prior to joining FirstBank, Buchanan was part of the original team of bankers that founded Progress Bank in 2007, which was later acquired by United Community Bank. Buchanan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Auburn University.

A Huntsville native, Buchanan graduated from Huntsville High School and continues to reside in the city with his wife of 30 years. He has served on numerous civic boards and nonprofit organizations and remains actively involved with the Huntsville Rotary Club. In his free time, Buchanan enjoys golfing, bird hunting, and spending time with his wife and their three children.
