Road Closures for Ironman Triathlon - September 6 & 7

Several roads, in and around Madison's downtown, will be closed for the annual Ironman 70.3 Triathlon on Saturday, September 6 and full Ironman Sunday, September 7th.

The race will begin at 7:00am both days with the Ironman 70.3 finishing by 4:30pm and the full Ironman finishing by midnight. The triathlon consists of swimming in Lake Monona, bicycling in Dane County, and running in the downtown/campus area.

Police will maintain local access across the route only when possible, during gaps in the runners/bicyclists along the race route. Thru-traffic driving across the route will not be permitted.

Set Up

The 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will close to vehicles starting on September 3 for set up the start/finish line, and will reopen Monday, September 8 by 2:00pm.

Swim Route

There are no road closures for the swim route. The swim route is the same for both races, with different laps requirements.

Bicycle Route

The course takes event participants out of Madison creating minimal impacts because of the Ironman 70.3 event on September 6th and the full Ironman event on September 7th bike events

Impacts in the City of Madison

  • Right lane of northbound John Nolen Drive, from E Lakeside Street to the Monona Terrace
  • E Lakeside Street, east of John Nolen Drive
  • Olin-Turville Court
  • Rimrock Road ramps to/from the Beltline

Run Route

  • The run portion of the Ironman 70.3 race on Saturday, September 6th starts and ends at the Alliant Energy Center. The course moves along Lake Monona, from Olin Park to Olbrich Park, creating minimal impacts to traffic.
  • The run portion of the full Ironman race on Sunday, September 7th will take runners onto the Capitol Square, onto the Southwest Commuter Path, through Camp Randall, and portions of the UW Campus.
