Columbia, S.C. - On New Year's Day, the South Carolina State Park Service will once again ring in the new year with its popular First Day Hikes program. These events invite individuals and families to start the year outdoors - getting active, reconnecting with nature, and embracing a tradition that has become a meaningful annual ritual for many.
Participants can choose from a variety of activities, including guided hikes, bike rides, and 5K events, offering something for every interest and ability level.
"Whether you're an Ultimate Outsider who has visited all 49 state parks or someone who has never set foot in a state park before, make 2026 the year you spend more time enjoying fresh air, open skies, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in South Carolina," said State Parks Director, Joy Raintree. "South Carolina State Parks truly offer an adventure for everyone. After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, a First Day Hike is the perfect opportunity to unplug, de-stress, recharge, and maybe even learn something new while taking in the natural beauty of the Palmetto State."
A complete schedule of First Day Hikes and activities is available
here. Pre-registration is required for the 5K events and plunges.
Guided First Day Hikes are included with regular park admission and are part of a nationwide New Year's Day tradition celebrated in state parks across the country. All participating hikers will receive an official First Day Hike sticker (while supplies last).
