Minister Tajani inaugurates today the second edition of the Space Economy States General

The second edition of the Space Economy States General begins today at the Foreign Ministry. It is an event bringing together institutional stakeholders and the industrial and business worlds of the space and defence sector. The opening session, dedicated to the theme "Space Diplomacy: A Foreign Policy Instrument and Driver of Growth," will be opened by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

The 2025 edition of the event, after the one in September last year that saw the participation of over 240 speakers, takes place at a particularly important time for the sector, following the recent adoption of the first Italian space law and while work is underway at the European level on an EU Space Act. Furthermore, the States General comes shortly before the Ministerial meeting of the European Space Agency, which in November-under the Italian Presidency-will define Europe's ambitions for the next three years, amid profound changes in the space industry and challenges related to the growing connections between space and defence. Italy is very active on this issue at the international and multilateral level, and Italy will be a key player at the United Nations with its 2026-2027 Presidency of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), the only global forum for the definition of common rules.

The event, hosted at the Foreign Ministry, will feature Minister Tajani, along with Andrea Mascaretti, President of the Space Economy Inter-Parliamentary Group; Antonella Sberna, Vice President of the European Parliament; and Roberta Angelilli, Vice President and Councillor for Economic Development of the Lazio Region. The event will then continue with a discussion on cooperation in space and aerospace, focusing on the objectives of space diplomacy and Italy's international partnerships. The roundtable will be moderated by General Franco Federici, Military Advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary of COMINT (Inter-Ministerial Committee for Space Policies), and Marco Lisi, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Space.

The Space Economy event will continue until 31 October and will take place not only in Rome but also in Turin and Milan, bringing together institutions, the financial world, representatives of major Italian industries, universities, and research in three events dedicated to the challenges of diplomacy, technological innovation, and sustainability.
