The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has launched a refreshed brand identity-including a new logo and tagline-that builds on the institution's historic foundation as it continues to advance excellence in clinical care, education, research and innovation.
At the center of the new logo is a shield inspired by Old Red, the university's iconic Ashbel Smith Building. The shield symbolizes strength, tradition, and enduring presence of UTMB in the community. Paired with a modern typeface and The University of Texas System's official orange and blue, the new visual identity strengthens the connection of UTMB to the broader UT family and reinforces trust in the institution's name.
The updated look is accompanied by a new tagline, "Where Purpose Meets Passion," which captures the energy, compassion, curiosity, and commitment that define the workforce and mission of UTMB across its hospitals, clinics, classrooms, and research laboratories.
The brand refresh reflects the university's strategic effort to elevate its identity as a global leader in academic health sciences and tell the story of an institution that is growing, innovating, and striving to shape healthier futures across Texas and beyond.
The new identity aligns UTMB more closely with the UT System, amplifies its message of excellence, and provides a unified voice for the institution's clinical, academic, research, and innovation enterprises.
"This refreshed brand is a reflection of the compassion and professionalism of our dedicated clinical care team, researchers, teachers, and support staff-and to the great potential we see in our students who will help UTMB lead the way in patient care and medical advancements well into the future," said Dr. Jochen Reiser, UTMB president and CEO of the UTMB Health System.
"It helps us tell a clearer, stronger story about who we are and where we're headed. It reaffirms our commitment to the patients we serve, the people we educate, and the communities-near and far-that rely on us. It is both a symbol of our past and a beacon for our future."
According to UTMB leaders, the refreshed identity is both a tribute to more than 130 years of institutional excellence and a signpost for the next era of growth. Every UTMB employee, whether in clinical care, research, education, support operations, or innovation, plays a vital role in fulfilling that mission.
"Our new logo and tagline represent a new day at UTMB. This isn't just a new design. It's a symbol of who we are, what we value, and where we're going," said Reiser. "It is bold, true, and distinctly UTMB."
From the outside, the refreshed brand serves as a renewed promise that UTMB remains steadfast in delivering exceptional care, driving breakthrough discoveries, inspiring learners, and turning innovative ideas into real-world solutions.
Internally, it's designed to strengthen unity, pride, and purpose across the UTMB community. The rollout will be reflected across university campuses, websites, signage, marketing materials, and digital platforms beginning today and continuing over the next few months.
