Montgomery Fire/Rescue Celebrates Graduation of Inaugural Citizens Academy Class

Montgomery, AL - The City of Montgomery and Montgomery Fire/Rescue (MFR) proudly announce the graduation of the inaugural class of the Montgomery Fire/Rescue Citizens Academy, marking a significant step forward in strengthening community engagement and public safety awareness.

As one of only a select number of fire departments nationwide to hold an ISO Class 1 rating and national accreditation, Montgomery Fire/Rescue launched the Citizens Academy to give residents, civic leaders, and community partners a clear, firsthand understanding of the department's day-to-day operations, emergency response capabilities, and life-saving work performed by its firefighters and paramedics.

Over the past several weeks, participants engaged directly with fire personnel through hands-on demonstrations and interactive sessions focused on fire prevention, emergency response, and rescue operations. The program was designed to increase transparency, build trust, and equip residents with knowledge that can help keep their families and neighbors safe.

"This program is about building trust through understanding," said Mayor Steven L. Reed. "When residents can see firsthand the level of training, preparation, and commitment our firefighters bring to this work every day, it strengthens confidence in the systems that protect our city. This is another way we are investing in a safer, more informed Montgomery."

The Citizens Academy builds on a period of continued advancement for MFR, including the last year's opening of Fire Station 10-one of the most modern facilities in the region-and the department's achievement of an ISO Class 1 rating and national accreditation, distinctions held by only a small percentage of fire departments nationwide.

"This inaugural class represents an important step in opening our doors to the community we serve," said Fire Chief Russell Collier. "Our goal is to provide clarity about what we do, how we do it, and why it matters. When residents understand our capabilities and the decisions we make in critical moments, it strengthens the partnership between our department and the community."

Due to strong interest and the early success of the program, Montgomery Fire/Rescue plans to expand the Citizens Academy with additional opportunities for residents in the near future.

The Citizens Academy reflects the City's ongoing commitment to transparency, public safety education, and stronger collaboration between residents and first responders.
