House Minority Leader Tony McCombie hosted the Illinois House Republicans' annual Women to Watch Event. The program invites women from across the state to the Capitol for a day of recognition, celebration, and networking. Each year House Republican lawmakers are tasked with identifying leaders in their respective communities who are making a difference.
This year's event included a special panel discussion with Leader McCombie and Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, Chris Cournoyer. Lt. Governor Cournoyer is a strong advocate for STEM education and has worked to expand opportunities for students, through hands-on, work-based learning. Raised by an engineer and a teacher, McCombie noted during the event that Cournoyer's passion clearly comes naturally.
The two leaders discussed their respective roles serving in state legislatures, their journey to leadership, and what has helped them along the way.
In her remarks to the group, McCombie noted her excitement to carry on this annual event.
"It's meaningful because it brings incredible women together under one roof, women who are showing up every day and making Illinois stronger, one community at a time," said McCombie.
"The women at this event are here because of their leadership, commitment, and impact-it matters. It makes a difference. Today, is a day to recognize them and say thank you."
Included in the event were two of McCombie's honorees from the 89th District: Hannah Davekos from Genoa and Caitlin Benes from Kirkland.
McCombie will also host an additional event this summer to honor more leaders in her district.
