Community drive to collect essential items for victims of domestic abuse

People across the borough are being encouraged to donate essential items for women fleeing domestic abuse as part of a community appeal launched by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Festival Place.

To mark White Ribbon Day 2025, the White Ribbon Essentials Appeal has been launched to collect essential toiletries in the shopping centre for women staying in Basingstoke's domestic abuse refuge.

White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people to act and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence against women and girls. The council has been accredited by White Ribbon since 2022.

With women and children often arriving at the refuge with very little with them, items being sought include new, unopened bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste and deodorant.

Donations should be taken to the White Ribbon stall in Festival Place on Saturday 22 November and Tuesday 25 November, or at a dedicated collection point in the Festival Place Customer Lounge by the end of Wednesday 26 November.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Partnerships and Inclusion Cllr John McKay said: "This appeal is a simple and meaningful way for residents to support the victims and survivors of domestic abuse. These essential toiletries help to make a stressful time a fraction easier, by giving them one less thing to worry about.

"Alongside this appeal, our targeted support for those affected by domestic abuse goes much further including our domestic abuse specialists who work with people whose housing situation is affected to develop a detailed safety plan based on their individual situations."

Festival Place Centre Director Vicky Hickson said: "Festival Place is more than just a place to shop - it's where the whole community can come together and make a difference. This is why we're encouraging our visitors to show their kindness and donate items such as everyday toiletries and essentials."
