Chandler City Council adopts drink…

April 24, 2026

Chandler, Ariz. - The Chandler City Council has unanimously adopted a new ordinance that makes it a local crime to knowingly tamper with or attempt to spike another person's food or drink, strengthening protections for residents and visitors in the community.

The action establishes a class 1 misdemeanor for any person who intentionally places a drug, substance or intoxicant into someone else's beverage or food without their knowledge or consent, or who even attempts to do so. It complements existing state statutes that already make intentional drink spiking a felony offense.

By adding a clearly defined city-level misdemeanor, Chandler aims to address a wider range of situations and support quicker local prosecution when a case does not meet the threshold for a felony charge under Arizona state law. The law applies citywide effective May 24, 2026.

It aligns with a broader regional effort in the East Valley to promote safe dining and nightlife districts. Chandler will continue working with local businesses and regional agencies to raise awareness and encourage best practices, such as staff training and rapid reporting protocols, to ensure that patrons feel safe.
