BJS Releases Prisoners in 2023 - Statistical Tables and Correctional Populations in the United States, 2023 - Statistical Tables

The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, released the following two publications today:

Prisoners in 2023 - Statistical Tables provides statistics on state and federal prisoners in the United States in 2023, based on data from BJS's National Prisoner Statistics program. The report provides counts of prisoners under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities in 2023 and includes findings on admissions, releases, and imprisonment rates. It also describes demographic and offense characteristics of state and federal prisoners, and statistics on prisoners held under military jurisdiction. This report is the 98th in a series that began in 1926.

Correctional Populations in the United States, 2023 - Statistical Tables presents statistics on the total correctional population in the United States. The report summarizes information on populations supervised by probation or parole agencies and those incarcerated in state or federal prisons or in the custody of local jails. It also presents statistics on the number of persons supervised by adult correctional systems from 2013 to 2023 and on their correctional status (i.e., in prison, in local jail, on probation, or on parole), and includes tables on the sex and race or ethnicity of persons supervised by correctional systems. BJS has published statistics on correctional populations since 1985.
