Update on Administrative Access for New Computers

As part of the university's ongoing commitment to protecting its data, ITS is updating how administrative access is assigned on newly deployed computers.

What's Changing?
Effective immediately, new computers will no longer come with automatic administrative rights. (Existing computers will be addressed as part of a later phase of this change.)

What Does This Mean for You?

  • There may be certain things that you can no longer do on your computer without requesting and being granted approval, such as installing or removing software or changing/updating some system settings.
  • Your day-to-day work will not change much. The things that most of us do every day - using Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.), accessing websites, and working in cloud-based applications such as Blackboard and DASH - will not be affected.
  • We are monitoring the most used software to ensure they are available to you without needing administrative rights.

If You Need Administrative Access
In situations where elevated access is required, you can request a security exception/exemption. Our team will work with you to ensure you have what you need when you need it. We're also working on additional tools to make this transition as seamless as possible and reduce the need for manual requests.

Please contact the ITS Service Desk if you have questions or need assistance.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our campus secure.
