AI-Coach enhances learning in the NWoW business simulation

An AI-powered coach has been introduced in the NWoW simulation to help participants analyse the information generated during the simulation and deepen their strategic thinking. The first course using the new AI feature has now been completed, and the experience has been very promising. The tool will be developed further this autumn, drawing on experiences from the course and analysis of the material generated by the AI assistant.

NWoW is a collaborative, web-based business simulation that models business networks, helping participants understand and develop complex business ecosystems. Around 1,500 students participate in simulations each year through courses organised by Turku School of Economics and CCR.

Learning in a complex business simulation relies heavily on using the extensive simulation data available to inform ongoing decision-making, as well as monitoring decisions and evaluating their consequences. A key opportunity offered by the AI coach is its ability to process far larger volumes of simulation data than participants would have time to review themselves. The AI assistant can help identify trends, compare strategic alternatives, assess potential partners and examine the consequences of decisions. In doing so, it can deepen participants' understanding of business operations and the wider business environment, while offering new perspectives to support decision-making.

The AI-Coach thus serves as an assistant that challenges and deepens participants' thinking, helping them turn information gathered during the simulation into insights and well-informed decisions. This also enables more personalised learning paths while making the teaching more relevant to professional practice.

The next simulation course this autumn will also include the first pilot involving student collaboration with Lancaster University Management School. The pilot will focus particularly on using the AI tool in strategy work: how the AI-Coach can support the interpretation of simulation data, the justification of strategic choices and learning.
