ELECTRIC SCOOTER ENFORCEMENT - Electric scooters are subject to California Vehicle Code (CVC) regulations:
21221 CVC - Scooters are subject to the same laws as a driver of a vehicle
21228 CVC - Must ride against the right shoulder
21235(c) CVC - Persons under 18 - helmets are required
21235(d) CVC - Valid driver's license or permit required
21235(e) CVC - No passengers in addition to the operator
21235(g) CVC - No riding on sidewalks
21235(i) CVC - May not park scooter on sidewalks
22411 CVC - Scooters may not exceed 15 mph
ELECTRIC BICYCLE ENFORCEMENT - All classes of electric bicycles fall under the same California Vehicle Code (CVC) rules as regular bicycles:
21200.2 CVC - DUI on a bicycle
21201(d)(1) CVC - Headlamp required during darkness
21203 CVC - Bicycles/e-bikes can not be pulled by a vehicle
21204(b) CVC - Passenger not riding on permanent seat (sitting on handlebars)
21210 CVC - Parked bicycle obstructing sidewalk
21212(a) CVC - Persons under 18 - helmets are required
21650.1 CVC - Bicycles must travel in the same direction as automobiles
10.64.025 GMC - No riding of bicycles on the sidewalks in a business district
E-MOTORCYCLES 436.1 CVC
- Electric off-road motorcycle
- Equipped with foot pegs not pedals
- Illegal to operate within city limits
ELECTRIC BICYCLES 312.5(a) CVC
- A bicycle, but electric
- Has pedals like an ordinary bicycle
Class #1
- Any Age can ride
- Helmet required under 18 yrs old
- Maximum motor assist speed of 20 mph
- No throttle
Class #2
- Any age can ride
- Helmet required under 18 years old
- Maximum motor assist speed of 20 mph
- Thumb throttle on handlebars
Class #3
- Minimum age of 16 years old
- Helmet required
- Maximum motor assist speed of 28mph
- No throttle
- Equipped with a speedometer
ELECTRIC SCOOTERS 407(a) CVC
- Two-wheeled with handlebars and a floorboard to place your feet
- No pegs or pedals
- Requires driver's license - Any class
- Helmet required under 18 yrs old
- May not exceed 15 mph
- May not be ridden on sidewalks
ELECTRIC SKATEBOARDS 313.5 CVC
- Electrically motorized board
- 21968(a) CVC - Electric skateboards may not be operated within city limits
