Toolkit Helps Members Prepare Communities for El Niño Flooding

ACWA has developed a toolkit to help member agencies educate their customers and communities about flood preparedness. Released in conjunction with Flood Preparedness Week Oct. 17-24, the toolkit resources can also help agencies reach out throughout this fall and winter, with the high likelihood of a strong El Niño bringing historically heavy rains.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is currently forecasting a greater than 90% chance of a powerful El Niño during the 2026-'27 wet season.

Flooding is one of the state's most significant natural hazards. Preparation can help protect lives, property and communities. Flood Preparedness Week provides an opportunity for water agencies to share information about how they prepare for storms and flooding while helping customers understand what they can do to be ready.

Members can access the toolkit online. Tools include talking points, an FAQ and sample social media posts and graphics, as well as links to other resources. Suggested outreach tactics are also listed.
