Philippines: Ube - Purple Yam - A High-Value Specialty Crop with Growing Domestic and Export Market Potential

Ube (purple yam) is a high-value Philippine specialty crop with growing domestic and export market potential, driven by global demand for natural food ingredients, ethnic flavors, and plant-based products. Production remains modest, constrained by limited planting material, fragmented smallholder production, and insufficient processing capacity. Significant untapped potential remains across the value chain, including nursery development, farm production, postharvest handling, processing, and market linkages. This market brief is published by the USDA-FAS Manila as part of its ongoing series on Philippine agricultural commodities. It is intended for informational purposes only and does not replace, or supplement any Notice of Funding Opportunity related to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Food for Progress program, which identified the ube value chain as a priority sector for the Philippines.
