The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) awarded Kulsoom Mohammad and Nathan Witteveen the ASCP Medical Student Award. The honor is given to 10 medical students who have "achieved academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, and shown a strong interest in the pathology profession."
The students were nominated by their faculty mentor, Geisinger pathologist, Renee Frank, MD.
"Both Kulsoom and Nathan embody the values of Geisinger, GCSOM, and the ASCP; that is to say they are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in everything they do at Geisinger," Dr. Frank said. "They both exhibit traits that will suit them well in their professional careers and I am proud to have supported them in their training. Like past winners from GCSOM, they are exceedingly deserving of this recognition."
The awards will be presented at ASCP's annual meeting in November in Atlanta.
"Winning this award is an honor," Nathan said. "I love pathology because it keeps a broad scope of practice while allowing me to give confident, result-driven diagnoses that directly impact patient care."
Kulsoom agreed, saying, "Receiving the ASCP Medical Student Award is a true honor. It's incredibly rewarding to have my academic efforts and interest in pathology recognized by such a respected organization. This award inspires me to continue engaging deeply with the foundations of medicine, through diagnosis, education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, and it reaffirms my commitment to becoming the most thoughtful and well-rounded physician I can be."
Calling itself the "preeminent medical society for pathology and laboratory professionals," ASCP boasts more than 100,000 members, including board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologists, pathology residents and fellows, laboratory professionals, and students around the world.
Its mission is to provide excellence in education, certification, and advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists, and laboratory professionals.
