Washington, D.C. - Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement on the approval of Elon Musk's trillion-dollar Tesla compensation package:
"The fact that anyone could pursue or approve this gluttonous level of compensation is a sign of moral rot at the highest levels of our economy. There is something deeply and shamefully broken in an economy that creates trillionaires while it buries working people under the cost of living. If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that Donald Trump and Republicans won't admit that this is an obscene problem, they'll celebrate Musk's wealth as a future source of campaign funds. The kind of wealth inequality on display today, as Republicans force 42 million people to go without food, is unsustainable in a democracy, and at some point there's going to be a major realignment of policy to address it. The ultra-wealthy ought to realize that proposals like my Billionaires Income Tax, which is aimed simply at ensuring they pay a fair share, represent the moderate path forward."
