Union City, CA - Southland Industries has been awarded a design-build mechanical and plumbing contract for a new healthcare facility in Santa Clara, California, continuing a growing partnership with one of the region's premier healthcare providers.
The planned 8-story, 850,000-square-foot medical center is a part of the client's largest investment in its history. Designed to serve a region long underserved in hospital capacity, the facility will include 272 licensed beds, a full-service emergency department, intensive care units, labor and delivery with a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, advanced operating rooms, and a rooftop helipad. The medical center is projected to open in late 2031.
Southland is serving as Engineer of Record on the project, working within an Integrated Form of Agreement (IFOA) alongside Sutter Health's Facility and Property Service team and DPR Construction. The IFOA model unites the project team under shared goals and risk parameters, enabling early decision-making, collaborative planning, and reduced rework across a highly complex acute-care scope.
"The IFOA model enables the kind of early alignment and disciplined decision-making that makes complex healthcare programs predictable," said Henry Nutt III, Business Development Executive. "That collaborative framework is a competitive advantage for everyone on the team."
This project award builds on Southland's work across the client's broader healthcare program. Southland previously partnered with this client on a 300,000 square foot adaptive reuse project that opened in October 2025 and is currently working on an additional 700,000 square foot specialty care facility scheduled to open in 2027. Together, the three projects reflect a long-term commitment to expanding access to care across one of the fastest-growing communities in Northern California.
"Being selected to continue on this project is a direct result of the trust we built with this team from day one," said Sarah Schettler, Senior Design Engineer. "Early involvement in the design process allows us to identify inefficiencies before they become potential issues, and that ultimately leads to a better outcome for the client."
