Clay County Safe Streets for All: A roadmap to zero traffic fatalities
Clay County is taking steps to make our roads safer for everyone. Representatives from the Foresite Group presented recommendations for the Safe Streets for All Comprehensive Safety Action Plan-a strategy to reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and save lives. Guided by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2050, the plan identifies high-risk roads and intersections and advances safer infrastructure, stronger policies, targeted education, and consistent enforcement to protect pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users. You can learn more about the ongoing work and community engagement on our website. You can also watch the presentation and discussion beginning at the 13:16 mark of the meeting.
County to build new Boardwalk at Moccasin Slough Park
Clay County plans to build a public access boardwalk at Moccasin Slough Park in Fleming Island, giving residents space to explore, learn, and enjoy the 255-acre wetland, while protecting the pristine waterfront. Commissioners approved the award of Bid No. 25/26-043 to Legacy Dock and Marine Construction, LLC, a contractor with proven County experience. The design of the project includes 5 segments. Legislative appropriations were received in previous years, and the County received a $400,000 Local Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program Matching Grant for the first segments of the boardwalk project. An appropriation request of $750,000 is being considered to construct the next phases of the boardwalk. Listen to the discussion at the 2:14:54 mark of the meeting video.
New and returning members join citizens advisory committees
Commissioners reappointed Camille Arensdorf, Mitchell Askelson, Sheri Chase, and David Herold to the Fleming Island Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC), recognizing their outstanding service. They also appointed Dr. Chanda Holsey-who previously served on the CAC in 2021-bringing valuable experience back to the Committee. Additionally, Commissioners appointed Debbie Pascoe to the OakLeaf Branan-Ridge Citizens Advisory Committee. A dedicated community leader, she looks forward to serving residents in this new role. Working to keep County government safe and efficient with Enterprise Risk Management
Clerk and Comptroller's Office Inspector General Nick Miller updated Commissioners on efforts to identify the County's most critical risks and focus audits where safeguards are needed most. In partnership with the Clerk of Court and Comptroller's Office, the County is strengthening oversight to improve efficiency, security, and alignment with its strategic plan. Using an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) model, the County is evaluating strategic goals, improving operations, managing risks-from cyber to strategic threats-and strengthening public safety, cost control, and decision-making.
