Roseau, Dominica, 14 May 2026 (PAHO) - The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services (MOHWSS), in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), hosted a training session aimed at enhancing the data analysis capabilities of clerical staff.
The training, titled "Strengthening Capacity for Data Analysis," was designed to equip participants with practical skills to manage data more confidently and efficiently, ensuring that information is accurate, accessible, and useful in today's data-driven work environment.
The session introduced participants to the fundamentals of Microsoft Excel, with a strong emphasis on organized data entry, formatting, and validation tools such as dropdown lists. Participants also engaged in hands-on activities, including data entry, record organization, and exporting datasets. Additionally, the use of file formats such as CSV and PDF, along with cloud-based data sharing, was demonstrated.
A key highlight of the training was the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools within Microsoft Excel. Participants explored how automation tools, including Copilot, can simplify tasks such as creating pivot tables, charts, and summaries, enabling faster and more effective data analysis.
The training also featured an introduction to digital data collection tools, including Google Forms and Microsoft Forms. Google Forms was recognized for its ease of use and suitability for community engagement, while Microsoft Forms was recommended for internal use due to its seamless integration with Excel. These tools are expected to support efficient data collection for events such as trainings, workshops, and feedback exercises.
Participants were encouraged to apply the skills gained regularly to build confidence and improve their efficiency in handling data. Administrative Cadet and course participant, Ms. Regina Thomas stated, "Another training session would be beneficial, to support continued learning of clerical staff, especially access to online resources."
This initiative highlights MOHWSS's ongoing commitment to strengthening digital literacy among staff, enabling them to leverage modern analytical tools and adopt sound data management practices in support of organizational goals and improved service delivery.
