AUC Chairperson received the Executive Secretary of IGAD

The Executive Secretary of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, was this afternoon received by H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, at AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa for their regular consultations on regional peace, security & development, with a particular focus on the evolving situation in the Republic of #Sudan.

The consultations underscored the important & complementary roles of the AU & IGAD in supporting Sudan's efforts to restore constitutional order & advance a sustainable political settlement. The Chairperson welcomed Dr. Workneh's recent visit to Khartoum, during which he engaged with senior Sudanese officials, including the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.

Dr. Workneh expressed appreciation for the AU's continued diplomatic engagement & efforts to promote peace and stability in Sudan & the wider region. The Chairperson & the Executive Secretary reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening AU-IGAD coordination in support of a lasting & inclusive peace through a Sudanese-led & Sudanese-owned political process.

They further agreed on the importance of enhanced coordination & complementarity with key international & regional partners, including the Quintet, the Quad, the EU & the UN, with a view to ensuring greater coherence & effectiveness of international diplomatic efforts in support of peace in Sudan.
