Homer Glen, IL…State Representative Patrick Sheehan (R-Lockport) issued the following statement today in response to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's recent remarks calling law enforcement a "sickness" to be "eradicated."
"Mayor Johnson's comments are reckless, insulting, and dangerous. To stand before the people of Chicago and declare that law enforcement is a 'sickness' is an affront to every police officer who has sworn an oath to protect and serve, and to every family that has lost a loved one to violent crime. Law enforcement is NOT a disease. It is the very foundation of public safety, the shield that protects communities from chaos, and the thin line that separates order from anarchy."
During a recent press conference, Mayor Johnson twisted crime statistics, reaching back decades to the city's worst murder rates while ignoring the years when stronger policing and accountability actually brought crime down. Instead of crediting the officers who stood on the front lines during Chicago's most violent decades, he labeled their work a "sickness" and promised to "eradicate" it. He even suggested that police badges themselves are part of the problem, dismissing the sacrifices of officers who serve honorably in some of the city's toughest neighborhoods.
Rep. Sheehan, a nearly 20-year police officer himself, said these remarks are disgraceful and dangerous to every member of law enforcement in this state.
"Mayor Johnson's comments are reckless and completely reprehensible. To stand before the people of Chicago and declare that law enforcement is a 'sickness' is an affront to every police officer that has died in the line of duty, every police officer that has sworn an oath to protect and serve, and to every family that has lost a loved one to violent crime."
Rep. Sheehan proudly serves the people of the 37th District.
