KC Water is continuing its citywide effort to identify the material of every water service line in Kansas City. This fall, the department is expanding its inspection process and introducing a new self-reporting tool for homeowners.
In October 2024, KC Water released its first Service Line Inventory-a detailed report identifying the materials that make up the city's water service lines. Based on historical records, KC Water found zero known lead lines, 129,958 non-lead lines, 23,109 galvanized lines, and 24,842 lines with unknown materials.
A public map of these findings is available at kcwater.us/servicelineinventory.
This work fulfills a nationwide EPA mandate requiring utilities to identify all water service line materials. The next phase focuses on verifying unknown lines through field inspections and public participation. KC Water piloted its verification process this fall in the Columbus Park and Lykins neighborhoods, identifying pipe materials from exterior access points such as water meter pits.
To support this effort, KC Water has launched a self-identification process that allows homeowners to check their own service line material and report it to the department for verification.
