Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) is the first provider in the Inland Empire to offer robotic High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), bringing an innovative, minimally invasive treatment option for men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer.
Using the advanced Focal OneĀ® robotic HIFU system, physicians can precisely target and destroy cancerous prostate tissue with the energy of focused ultrasound energy while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment requires no incisions and no radiation and is designed to reduce recovery time and minimize side effects that can affect quality of life.
"Bringing robotic HIFU to our region reflects our commitment to delivering the most advanced cancer treatments available," said Herb Ruckle, MD, chair of the Department of Urology at Loma Linda University Health. "Patients throughout the Inland Empire no longer need to leave the region to access this technology. They can receive comprehensive, state-of-the-art prostate cancer care from a team they know and trust."
Robotic HIFU is intended for men whose prostate cancer remains confined to the prostate and may also be an option for select patients whose cancer returns after radiation therapy. During the outpatient procedure, physicians use MRI, biopsy, and ultrasound information to create a three-dimensional treatment plan tailored to each patient. The Focal One system then delivers focused ultrasound energy directly to the targeted tissue under real-time robotic guidance. The approach allows physicians to personalize treatment, targeting only the cancerous area when appropriate while sparing healthy portions of the prostate.
HIFU has been used worldwide for more than 30 years, with tens of thousands of men treated globally. Research has shown that robotic HIFU can provide cancer control comparable to traditional treatments for appropriately selected patients while reducing the risk of side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
