Full Weekend Closures on Northbound U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) Planned September 4 -7 and September 18-21

Published: Aug 19, 2026

Northbound Lanes Closed between Cesar Chavez St. to 10th St.

San Francisco County - Caltrans will close all northbound U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) between Cesar Chavez and 10th St. in the City of San Francisco over two full weekends:

  • September 4-7 (Labor Day Weekend)
  • September 18-21

These lane closures are necessary to complete major pavement repair work as part of the ongoing Fab 4 Hospital Curve Rehabilitation Project, which began in Fall 2025. Work crews will conduct 24/7 operations during each closure weekend to ensure timely structural improvements.

Weekend Closure Details:

September 4-7 (Labor Day Weekend)
The full highway closure will begin on Friday, September 4 at 11 p.m., when all northbound lanes between Cesar Chavez Street and 10th Street will close. All lanes will reopen by Monday, September 7 at 6 a.m.

During this period:

  • All southbound lanes will remain open for public travel.
  • Motorists should avoid driving northbound 101 (Hospital Curve) due to anticipated delays.
  • Use I-280 as an alternate route.

September 18-21
A second full closure weekend will take place Friday, September 18 at 11 p.m. through Monday, September 21 at 6 a.m.

The same traffic reduction configuration will apply:

  • All northbound U.S. 101 lanes closed. All southbound lanes will remain open.

These closures continue the essential major pavement repair work required for long-term roadway rehabilitation.

Alternate Routes & Detours

Motorists are strongly encouraged to use:

  • I-280 northbound for travel toward downtown San Francisco or the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
  • Public transportation, which remains the best option to bypass congestion and avoid work-zone delays.

Detour Maps and Routes

Northbound lanes will be closed from Cesar Chavez to 10th

  1. Take NB I-280 to Bay Bridge
  2. Take SB I-280 to 19th or Monterey, off ramp to San Jose to Guerrero St.

Detour Map for Motorists Traveling to and from San Francisco Airport and Rental Car Center, the Peninsula and the South Bay

A dedicated detour map has been prepared for travelers departing from and to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the SFO Rental Car Center, as well as for motorists coming from the peninsula and the South Bay who are heading toward the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and/or San Francisco destinations.

The map illustrates the preferred routing during the weekend closure.

Driver and Community Benefits

Once complete, the project will:

  • Preserve and extend the life of the freeway corridor
  • Improve ride quality and driving comfort
  • Enhance overall freeway safety
