Minneapolis (April 16, 2026) --- Earlier today in downtown Minneapolis, beneath the 110- foot mural of Prince by Hiero Veiga, City leaders and entertainment enthusiasts unveiled a joyful one-time community experience: the Prince Sing-Along at the Celebration Block Party . Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, alongside civic leaders and representatives from Paisley Park, announced details for the large-scale participatory music event which will be a one-time-only signature addition to the annual Prince Celebration Block Party on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
"In Minneapolis, we don't just remember Prince - we feel him in the streets, in the music, in who we are," said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. "So, this June, we're turning downtown into a citywide choir, a full-on celebration, and yes, a dance party too. Whether you can hit every note or just love his songs, this sing-along is about honoring a legacy that still brings this city together every day. Trust me - you're going to want to be part of this."
The public is encouraged to come together for this interactive tribute as part of the Prince Celebration Block Party. The two-hour sing-along will be a free, all-ages outdoor event near the downtown Prince mural on the day before what would have been the Prince's 68th birthday (June 7).
Led by acclaimed Musical Director Sanford Moore of Moore By Four and a Minneapolis based mass choir of 100 vocalists, the crowd will be guided through a selection of Prince's greatest hits including "Purple Rain," "When Doves Cry," and "Sometimes it Snows in April." The event is expected to reflect upon the spontaneous outpouring of love outside First Avenue following his passing a decade ago.
The Sing-Along represents the City of Minneapolis' contribution to memorialize the 10-year anniversary year of his death and his birthday (June 7) as part of the Prince Celebration. The goal is to have up to 15,000 people singing arm-in-arm to Prince's beloved music, possibly even setting a record for the most uploaded social stories in one place. The result is sure to be a true "Minneapolis sound" and a major event for those who love his music.
Prince Celebration Block Party Sing-Along
The multi-day Prince Celebration is the annual gathering of devoted Prince fans from around the world presented by Paisley Park. This year's major five-day event, a "10th Anniversary Celebration of Life," will take place June 3 - 7, 2026.
"We're thrilled to partner with the City of Minneapolis and the Downtown Improvement District to offer more public access to Prince Celebration and bring this special tribute event to many who cannot make it to Paisley Park," says L. Londell McMillan, Prince's former attorney, manager, and friend. "Prince remained loyal and loved this city deeply. Prince would have supported his neighbors earlier this year, and the Block Party and Sing Along are about coming together in that same spirit, celebrating each other through his music in the heart of the community that meant so much to him."
"Prince is a singular artist of our time, and generations of Minneapolitans and Minnesotans have been raised with his music. I can think of no better way to memorialize 10-year anniversary year of his passing and to celebrate his birthday than thousands of his fans singing his songs in the streets of Minneapolis," said Ben Johnson, Arts & Cultural Affairs Director, City of Minneapolis. "It will be a day to remember as he truly represents the creative spirit and artistry of our great city."
"From Bunker's to Dakota Jazz Club to First Avenue, Prince loved to entertain and take in the irresistible vibe in downtown Minneapolis," says Adam Duininck, President and CEO, Minneapolis Downtown Council and Downtown Improvement District. "They say everyone in Minneapolis has a Prince story. If you need a fresh chapter, join us on June 6 and you will have an amazing story to tell!"
