CLARKSVILLE, TN -- Joined by Ward 2 Clarksville City Councilman Deanna McLaughlin, whose family has been directly affected by Alzheimer's in recent months, Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts has officially proclaimed September 21, 2025, as World Alzheimer's Day in the City of Clarksville.
The proclamation was presented on Thursday, September 4, 2025, during the City Council's monthly Regular Session.
The proclamation was presented to two active, local advocates for people living with Alzheimers and their caregivers, Barbara Ciavarella and Ashley Perry. The two women are also promoting Clarksville's "Walk to End Alzheimer's" which is set for October 11, 2025.
The proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, The theme for World Alzheimer's Day is "Ask About Dementia. Ask About Alzheimer's". This theme encourages open dialogue about dementia and Alzheimer's disease to promote early diagnosis, reduce stigma, and support those living with these conditions; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments. There are no known treatments to prevent, cure, or even delay the onset or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 7 million people are living with Alzheimer's, including more than 120,000 Tennesseans living with Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia . According to the National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and
WHEREAS , 1 in 7 American workers are also family caregivers for someone with dementia, and in Tennessee, nearly 369,000 family members and friends care for people living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, providing 499,000,000 hours of unpaid care valued at $7,804,000,000; and
WHEREAS, It is important to recognize the stories, strengths, and efforts of the individuals, families, friends, and caregivers impacted by Alzheimer's disease, as well as the tireless work of researchers who are seeking a cause and cure.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Joe Pitts , Mayor of the City of Clarksville, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2025 as World Alzheimer's Day and urge all residents to support those living with Alzheimer's and dementia and their caregivers, as well as support the Alzheimer's Association's "Walk to End Alzheimer's" in Clarksville on October 11, 2025.
