Congressman Carson Introduces Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing Medical Research

WASHINGTON, DC-Representatives André Carson (D-IN), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Suzan DelBene (D-WA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) introduced a bipartisan resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives recognizing September 16-20 as Medical Research Week. The resolution highlights the critical role medical research plays in improving lives, supporting communities, and driving innovation across the country.

Medical research-much of it conducted at academic medical centers-leads to life-changing breakthroughs in prevention, treatment, and cures for serious conditions like cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease, sickle cell anemia, and more. This work also addresses urgent public health challenges such as the opioid crisis and mental health, while preparing us for future health threats.

In Fiscal Year 2024, NIH-funded research helped generate nearly $95 billion in new economic activity and supported approximately 407,782 jobs nationwide. It also creates ripple effects in every state, increasing demand for medical supplies and benefiting local economies.

"Medical research has already changed countless lives, and the potential for future cures depends on our continued investment," said Rep. Carson. "I'm proud to lead bipartisan efforts to support NIH funding, expand research on diseases like pancreatic cancer, and ensure that clinical trials reflect the full diversity of our population. It's up to us to call for strong and sustained federal support to today's research that leads to tomorrow's cures - every day of the year."

"As we celebrate Medical Research Week, we honor the scientists and institutions whose discoveries save lives across the country. I'm proud to represent Columbus, a major hub of medical breakthroughs, and to advocate for the consistent and robust funding that drives this lifesaving work. I'm pleased to join Congressman Smucker, Congressman Fitzpatrick, and Congresswoman DelBene in a resolution recognizing this important week and all it represents," said Congresswoman Beatty.

"Medical Research Week is an opportunity to celebrate the innovations and efforts of so many scientists who have created the treatments, cures, and diagnostics that tackle terrible conditions like cancer, Alzheimer's, kidney failure, and the opioid epidemic. This inspirational work and the strong federal investments that power it make the United States the global driver of medical research and development," said Rep. Suzan DelBene. "Medical Research Week is also an opportunity to recommit ourselves to building on this progress by not only defending but expanding funding for our government's lead health research agency - the National Institutes of Health - so we can continue to develop the cures of tomorrow."

"Behind every research grant is a patient, a family, and a community waiting for answers. Medical research is one of the smartest investments we can make-it saves lives, drives innovation, powers our economy, and prepares us for the next public-health threat. From my first days in Congress, I've worked across the aisle to fight for strong, sustained NIH funding, because every dollar accelerates breakthroughs, creates high-skilled jobs, keeps America on the cutting edge, and, above all, saves lives. By recognizing Medical Research Week, we reaffirm our commitment to keeping the United States the global leader in discovery, innovation, and lifesaving progress," said Rep. Fitzpatrick.

"It's no coincidence that the United States is the world leader in medical innovation. Our free-market system has fueled the discovery of new treatments, cures, and the promise of even more therapies on the horizon. I'm proud that Pennsylvania's institutions and companies are at the forefront of these advancements, and I am pleased to stand with my colleagues in introducing a resolution to honor Medical Research Week," said Rep. Lloyd Smucker.
