Carlton-Mellichamp Lecture explores connection between robotics-based STEM education and learning

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Guest lecturer Shinho Kim, PhD, Framingham State University, presents "Why Robotics-Based STEM Education Matters" on Feb. 26 from 4:30 to 6 p.m., part of this year's Carlton-Mellichamp Lecture in Educationhosted by the University of Northern Iowa College of Education at the Schindler Education Center.

Kim will address how robotics education, as a form of STEM education, helps foster problem-solving skills in both children and future teachers, aligning with the two-day professional development event's focus on how teaching across disciplines can foster creativity and systems thinking.

Kim is known for his research and scholarly focus on robotics, STEM education and instructional materials and strategies for young children. He also draws upon his experience as a former kindergarten teacher and current faculty member in early childhood, elementary and teacher education at FSU.

On Feb. 27, Kim leads two workshop sessions which will explore how to integrate robotics into classrooms.

All sessions are free and open to community educators in addition to UNI faculty, staff and students. Registration is encouraged. The annual conference is supported by donations to the UNI Foundation from alum Suzanne Carlton and Duncan Mellichamp.
