Mayor Mike Johnston Announces Citywide Goals for 2026

Published on January 26, 2026

Mayor Mike Johnston today announced new and ambitious citywide goals aimed at addressing Denverites' top priorities.

Building on the successes of last year, Denver aims to further reduce gun-related shootings and homicides, increase housing opportunities, decrease street homelessness, and develop more green infrastructure. The city also intends to expand access to childcare and bolster downtown by filling more office and retail space.

"Our strategies are proven," said Mayor Mike Johnston. "We will continue restoring trust between police and community, focusing intensively on areas seeing the most crime and the least joy. We will build more housing for people of all income brackets and ensure individuals experiencing homelessness receive constant and consistent support in making the leap to self-sufficiency. Along the way we'll also add more clean energy systems, think bigger on how we support working families with childcare, and connect more young people with jobs. That's how we'll build a safer, vibrant, and more affordable Denver."

2026 citywide goals include:

  • Decreasing gun-related homicides by 10 percent citywide and reducing shootings in high-risk neighborhoods by 20 percent
  • Filling 3 million square feet of downtown office and retail space
  • Reducing street homelessness by 75 percent from 2023, as measured by the 2027 unsheltered point-in-time count
  • Delivering 2,500 affordable units and permitting additional 5,000 total units. This will ensure we increase the supply of housing for people of all income levels
  • Installing 5,000 clean energy systems citywide and developing 50 acres of green infrastructure
  • Delivering a comprehensive citywide framework to expand affordable, reliable childcare, and connecting 5,000 more young people to quality out-of-school programming and work opportunities
