Second update: Columbia Police respond to shooting on East Broadway and Ninth Street

The Columbia Police Department is deeply saddened by the tragic events that have occurred Sept. 27, and our investigation remains active, thorough and detailed.

At this time, the charges filed against the suspect will remain in place unless and until there is a change in the life status of any victim. This includes being removed from artificial life support. This approach ensures that we maintain the highest standards of law in the prosecution and charging process.

We also recognize and respect the needs and wishes of the families affected during this extremely difficult time, and we remain committed to supporting them as the investigation continues.

At about 1:40 a.m. Sept. 27, Columbia Police responded to a shooting in the 900 block of East Broadway. Police officers located one adult male and two adult females with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical care was given to the victims. They were taken to a local hospital. One of the females is currently on artificial life support due to injuries sustained in the shooting.

Columbia Police took Misael Covarrubias, 23, of Fellsmere, Florida, into custody at 1:47 a.m. Investigators found that Covarrubias was in a verbal altercation in the area of Ninth Street and Broadway and discharged a firearm multiple times toward the people with whom he was in an altercation. Investigators determined that the three gunshot victims were in the 1000 block of East Broadway and were not involved in the altercation.

Covarrubias was arrested on charges of three counts of first-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
