Follow-up on Rio Grande Water Deliveries to the United States

To meet Mexico's delivery obligations for Rio Grande waters to the United States under the 1944 Water Treaty, Mexico has identified additional measures consistent with the Treaty's provisions and the applicable Minutes (234 and 331) based on water availability in the Mexican portion of the Rio Grande basin.

These measures include deliveries of water from the San Juan River, which will be carried out considering operational constraints and prioritizing agricultural use in Mexico. Accordingly, deliveries to the United States will be made when there is operational capacity in Mexico's hydraulic system, with priority given to human consumption.

This water source has been used previously to meet Rio Grande delivery obligations, under Article 9 of the Treaty and Minute 331 of the IBWC.

Mexico continues to closely monitor its commitments under the Treaty in coordination and dialogue with users in the Mexican basin, and reiterates that ensuring water for human consumption for Mexican communities dependent on these sources remains the top priority.
