HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A federal grand jury has indicted five individuals on child-exploitation charges, announced U.S. Attorney Phillip W. Williams Jr.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims. FBI investigated the cases along with the assistance of multiple other law enforcement agencies, including Department of Army Criminal Investigations Division, Homewood Police Department, Madison County Sheriff's Office, Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Colbert County Sheriff's Office, and Marshall County Sheriff's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys R. Leann White and Sara M. Judah are prosecuting the cases.
An indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
