Johnson County Government today announced it will receive a $21 million Federal Aviation Administration infrastructure grant to support the full reconstruction of Runway 18-36 at New Century AirCenter. The 7,300-foot runway is a critical piece of aviation infrastructure serving corporate, military and general aviation operations across the region.
The project, funded by the FAA's Airport Improvement Program, will modernize New Century AirCenter to current FAA safety and engineering standards. Johnson County will use the grant to reconstruct the runway and its lighting, as well as for new airfield signage and other markings. The project represents the largest federal grant ever received for Johnson County's airport system, underscoring the importance of maintaining safe, efficient and competitive airports that support both economic growth and regional mobility.
With 96,000 operations annually and approximately 120 aircraft based on-site, New Century AirCenter is the second-busiest airport in Kansas.
"New Century AirCenter contributes $1.1 billion annually to the local and regional economy," said Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mike Kelly. "I appreciate the strong partnership with U.S. Representative Sharice Davids, who continues to champion projects that directly benefit our community and enhance the long-term economic vitality of our region."
Airport executive director Bryan Johnson noted the grant award as a milestone achievement for the county.
"This substantial FAA investment ensures that Johnson County will continue to provide safe and reliable aviation facilities to serve our community, businesses and military partners," said Johnson. "The reconstruction of Runway 18-36 strengthens the county's position as a hub for aviation and commerce."
Construction on Runway 18-36 is anticipated to begin in 2027 and is designed to minimize operational disruptions.
