AKRON, OH - On Thursday, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) hosted a reception for the students from Ohio's 13th Congressional District who she nominated to a U.S. Military Service Academy. Rep. Sykes has the honor of nominating the best and brightest youth to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy.
"As your Member of Congress, it is an honor to nominate students from Ohio's 13th Congressional District to attend our country's respected service academies," said Rep. Sykes. "These students represent some of the best and brightest in our community, and I cannot wait to see what each of them goes on to accomplish."
At the reception, Rep. Sykes presented each nominee with a Congressional Recognition for their accomplishment. Rep. Sykes nominated 21 students to a service academy for the Class of 2030. These students will be reviewed by the service academies they were nominated to for possible admission.
The U.S. Service Academies are among the most highly respected educational programs in the nation. To be admitted to an academy, a prospective applicant must meet stringent academic, physical, and medical requirements specified by public law. Service Academy cadets are provided a fully-funded four-year college education. By law, graduates of service academies are appointed commissioned officers in their respective services and are required to serve at least five years of active duty. For graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the obligation can be active duty for five years in any branch, or eight years in a reserve capacity.
