On Tuesday, September 23rd, Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, received the visit of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Bucharest, H.E. Giles Portman.
During the meeting, the officials addressed topics of mutual strategic interest regarding the security situation in the Black Sea region, the implementation of the bilateral Defence Cooperation Agreement, and the preparation of the NATO Defence Ministers' Meeting, which will take place in October, this year.
The support for Ukraine, including specific projects and initiatives were also some of the topics listed on the meeting agenda. In this context, the officials talked about the cooperation between the two states within the Maritime Capabilities Coalition framework, under the umbrella of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG).
"The United Kingdom is one of Romania's most important partners and allies, our Strategic Partnership being essential for consolidating and modernizing Romania's defence capacity and for European security and supporting Ukraine's defence," Minister of National Defence stated.
With reference to NATO's collective defence, the two officials appreciated the very good level of cooperation between Romania and the United Kingdom, in the context of the multiple challenges posed to the Alliance's security and the evolution of the war in Ukraine. Minister Moșteanu also emphasized our country's role in strengthening the defence and deterrence posture on NATO's eastern flank.
