National security recognition reflects UChicago Medicine AdventHealth's commitment to safe, whole-person care

WESTMONT, Ill. - When patients and families come to UChicago Medicine AdventHealth hospitals, they deserve to feel safe, supported and cared for in every aspect of their healing journey.

That commitment to providing a secure environment where people can focus on their health and well-being has earned each UChicago Medicine AdventHealth hospital - in Bolingbrook, GlenOaks, Hinsdale and La Grange - the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) Program of Distinction designation.

UChicago Medicine AdventHealth's hospitals are the only Chicago-area hospitals or healthcare systems to earn IAHSS recognition in 2026 and four of only 95 healthcare organizations in the country to be recognized since the program began in 2007.

"It's an honor to be recognized by your peers, especially when it's the result of hard work and commitment on the part of every member of the security team," said Chris Schleder, regional director of security services. "The Program of Distinction designation is an affirmation of our dedication and focus every day to ensure the safety of patients, visitors and team members."

To qualify for the IAHSS Program of Distinction, 70% of the security officers must hold a current Basic, Advanced or Supervisor IAHSS certification.

The director or administrative leader of the security department must also be a current Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA). 

Schleder, who is CHPA-certified, and his security team of more than 60 members set the bar higher to avoid any doubt over attaining the Program of Distinction goal.

"We had a big push over the last six months before submitting our application in order to be able to get everyone certified because we didn't want to just hit 70%," Schleder said. "We really wanted to be as close as we could to 100% across the region. So, at the time, we were over 90%."

"It was inspiring to see that many people come together for a common goal. It took some effort, but it was a great win for the team."

The Program of Distinction is valid for two years.

Schleder and his team plan to apply for renewal - again with a target of 100% certification for the team.
