Cobb EMC has completed and commissioned two new battery energy storage systems on its electric system, strengthening reliability and helping manage power costs for members. Each battery can deliver up to 5 megawatts of electricity providing 10 megawatts of flexible capacity. The new system will be used to support the system during times of high demand or when extra power is needed.

The batteries work like large power banks for the electric grid. They store electricity when energy demand is lower and release it during peak times, such as on hot summer afternoons when electricity use is at its highest. This allows Cobb EMC to reduce the amount of higher-cost power it may need to purchase and helps stabilize the overall system.

"These batteries give us more flexibility in how we serve our members," said Tim Jarrell, Executive Vice President of Power Supply & Emerging Technologies at Cobb EMC. "They help us manage costs, strengthen reliability, and invest in technology that supports a more resilient and efficient electric system."

How the batteries help members
During periods of peak demand, electricity is often more expensive. By using stored energy to meet part of that demand, Cobb EMC can better control costs that ultimately affect members. The batteries also respond quickly, providing instant support to balance electricity supply and demand, which helps keep service reliable.

While the batteries are not intended to power the entire community on their own, they play an important supporting role behind the scenes. They can help ease strain on the system, support daily operations, and add another layer of protection during times of stress on the grid.
