WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) delivered remarks on the floor of the U.S. Senate condemning President Donald Trump's ongoing unauthorized military conflict in Venezuela. Following months of bombing in the Caribbean and Pacific, the unauthorized military attack on Venezuela, and the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the Trump Administration, the Senate is set to vote Thursday on a resolution Senator Baldwin co-sponsors to rein in President Trump's ability to conduct further military action in Venezuela without sign-off from Congress.
In 2002, Baldwin was a staunch advocate against the United States invading Iraq, warning that a lack of clear objectives and plan would lead to an unnecessary toll on American troops and taxpayers. In her speech today, Baldwin highlighted the similarities between Iraq and Venezuela and warned her colleagues of the risk to service members and their families of the United States engaging in another war.
Senator Baldwin also co-sponsors the Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act of 2025, which would prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Venezuela without explicit Congressional authorization. Both this legislation and the War Powers Resolution do not prevent the United States from acting to defend itself or its citizens from an armed attack or threat of an imminent armed attack, pursue lawful counternarcotics operations, or provide humanitarian assistance to the Venezuelan people.
