On Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 11:35 p.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to North Precinct responded to a home in the 3900 block of North Overlook Terrace on a report of a burglary in progress (PP26-140176). The caller stated that a man, whom she did not know, had broken into her home with her and her children inside. She reported that the man threatened to kill them all. She armed herself with a stick and chased the man, who grabbed a metal garbage can lid and fled from the home.

Officers quickly tracked the suspect into Overlook Park where they tried to stop the suspect. He was not compliant with police commands to stop, even when advised he was under arrest. He exited the park into an alleyway and back into the neighborhood. Officers called in additional resources to help and began using tactical apprehension strategies, all while running after him to keep him in sight. They could see that he had an object in his hand that appeared to be the metal garbage can lid. At North Concord Avenue north of North Prescott Street, the suspect started to run up a ramp leading up to the pedestrian bridge that spans Going Street. As the officers were approaching him, he suddenly turned and squared his body toward the lead officer. As the officer moved in, the suspect struck the officer in the head. The officer did not realize it at the time, but the suspect had a rock in his hand. The officer was able to safely take the suspect to the ground as cover officers were running up to assist.

They worked together to take him into custody. A rock roughly the size of a softball was located nearby.

Due to the felony assault on a uniformed police officer, Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit were paged and responded from home to assist with the investigation.

Timothy L. Reed, 35, of Portland, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Burglary in the First Degree, Escape in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Assaulting a Police Officer, and Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree.

The officer was transported to the hospital via police vehicle, treated, and released. He has been cleared to return to duty.
