REMINDER: Red Line Braintree Branch Will Be Suspended Between North Quincy and Braintree November 15 – 23

This notice serves as a reminder of the upcoming Red Line Braintree Branch closure previously announced on October 20.

The MBTA is today reminding riders that Red Line Braintree Branch service will be suspended between North Quincy and Braintree for nine days, November 15 - 23.

The MBTA will continue essential infrastructure upgrades, track renewal, and other critical revitalization work on the Red Line. Building on the success of the Track Improvement Program, this regular, planned renewal and revitalization work is ongoing and continuous, ensuring the long-term stability of our infrastructure and preserving the system for future generations of riders.

During this service change, crews will accomplish major rail revitalization work throughout the affected area with critical full-depth track replacement work and signal modernizations at the Quincy Center crossover, which is an area of complicated track that connects the main Braintree Branch to subway car storage track areas nearby. Crews are also maximizing the unencumbered access to the area by advancing many other critical projects, like security system upgrades, bridge project work and inspections, and station enhancements and deep cleaning. When service resumes following this service change, riders will experience an even more reliable trip on the Red Line with fewer disruptions due to older infrastructure and outdated signals. This work is also critical to maintaining consistent 50 MPH service on the Braintree Branch and supports the MBTA's goal of further reducing trip times for riders.

Riders can find complete information at mbta.com/RedLine. More information on these service changes and alternate travel options is below:

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace trains between North Quincy and Braintree.
    • Riders using shuttle bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling to Park Street from Braintree should budget at least an additional 35 minutes of travel in addition to their regular commute.
  • Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, and Greenbush Commuter Rail lines for fare-free service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station. Commuter Rail schedules are available on mbta.com/CR.
    • Commuter Rail trains operate about every 20 - 30 minutes.
    • Extra coaches will be added to the Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, and Greenbush Commuter Rail lines to accommodate the anticipated increase in ridership.
    • Riders should note that regular Commuter Rail fares will be collected for travel beyond Braintree.

More information is also available through in-station signage and public announcements. Transit Ambassadors and MBTA staff will be available on-site to offer information and assistance during these service changes. Riders are encouraged to subscribe to T-Alerts or to follow the MBTA on X @MBTA for up-to-date service information.
