Senator Fontana Statement on Allegheny County Reassessment Order

Allegheny County, August 17, 2026 - State Senator Wayne Fontana (D-Allegheny) issued the following statement on the Common Pleas Court order issued today to require Allegheny County conduct countywide property reassessments every five years starting in 2027:

"While today's court order will finally bring uniformity and predictability to Allegheny County property values, it is unfair that the surrounding counties can continue to not reassess-some for over 50 years.

Pennsylvania is trapped under a dysfunctional assessment system.

We are the only state in the country without regularly scheduled assessments, which leads to inequitable property values and unfair tax burdens. Statewide action must be taken to fix this because, as today's order illustrates, every county in the commonwealth is a court order away from having to conduct reassessments."

Last July, Fontana introduced Senate Bill 567 that would require all Commonwealth counties to conduct property reassessments on a uniform five-year cycle. The bill has not yet been considered in the Senate Local Government Committee.
