Hickenlooper has led the fight in Congress to prevent election criminals like Tina Peters from receiving taxpayer-funded payouts
DENVER, Colo. - Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the following statement in response to President Trump's poll asking whether he should "clear [Tina Peters'] name and compensate her." Trump's Truth Social post came after Peters did an interview with MAGA podcaster Joe Oltmann, where she remained unrepentant and continued spreading conspiracies about Colorado's safe and secure elections.
"I do show remorse. The remorse is that people that should be in prison are not…. The remorse for me is that the things that were exposed, nothing has been done about," Peters said.
"Tina Peters doesn't deserve a dime of your taxpayer money. She deserves to be in jail," said Hickenlooper. "She's unrepentant and continues peddling dangerous lies that put our free and fair elections and the public servants who run them at risk. We led the fight that forced the White House to back down from its disgraceful slush fund for election criminals and the Jan. 6 rioters. And we'll keep fighting until it's dead permanently. Tina Peters is no innocent victim. She is guilty as sin."
Hickenlooper has led the fight in Congress to prevent election criminals like Tina Peters from receiving taxpayer-funded payouts from the Department of Justice's $1.8 billion slush fund. Hickenlooper introduced an amendment to the last Republican reconciliation bill that would permanently stop Trump from giving a taxpayer-funded payout to Tina Peters.
Following bipartisan outcry, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on June 2nd that the fund would not move forward. However, this week, a lawsuit challenging the fund was permitted to proceed after the Department of Justice officially declined to declare the slush fund dead.
Peters is expected to speak at Rocky Mountain Voice's Freedom Fest this weekend, less than a month after her release from prison.
