Congratulations to António Seguro: A first-round win marked by unity and hope

The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates António José Seguro on advancing to the second round of the Portuguese presidential election at the leading position.

Seguro has won the first round, standing by unification, hope, and democracy. He put people's real concerns - such as health, housing, and the economy - at the heart of the debate.

It was also a campaign about democracy, constitutional values, and the role of the Presidency as a guarantor of democratic stability. The PES is closely following the democratic moment in Portugal and underlines the importance of presidential leadership firmly committed to democracy, freedom and the rule of law.

The choice facing voters in the second round, to be held on 8 February, goes beyond individual political preferences. At a time when democratic checks and balances must be actively protected, the Presidency of the Republic must remain a guarantor of institutional stability, constitutional order, and fundamental freedoms. António José Seguro is the candidate of all Portuguese people - the one capable of being the President for a new time.

The President of the PES, Stefan Löfven, stated:

"At a time when democracy and fundamental freedoms are increasingly challenged across Europe, Portugal has the opportunity to reaffirm its strong democratic tradition. António José Seguro represents a clear commitment to democratic values, freedom and respect for the rule of law.
For all Portuguese citizens who care deeply about democracy, openness and Europe's future, António José Seguro is a candidate who deserves trust and support."

António José Seguro is widely recognised as a committed supporter of the European project and now faces the responsibility of continuing to embody the values of dialogue, unity and democratic responsibility that are essential to the role of President of the Republic.

The Secretary General of the PES, Giacomo Filibeck, also highlighted the candidate's long-standing European engagement:

"I have known António José Seguro for many years. From his early involvement in youth leadership to his responsibilities at national and European level, he has always been a deeply committed supporter of the European project.
He has been an example for our generation. A leader guided by dialogue, responsibility, and strong democratic conviction."

The PES reaffirms its support for leaders who stand for a democratic, pluralistic, and united Europe, grounded in the core values that have shaped the European project from its very beginning.
