John Nauright named dean of Penn State’s University College

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - John Nauright, associate dean for research and innovation and special assistant for health initiatives in the College of Human Sciences and Education at Louisiana State University, has been named dean of the University College at Penn State, effective July 1.

As dean, Nauright will serve as a senior academic leader within the Office of the Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses, with responsibility for the University College's strategic academic direction; faculty affairs; its portfolio of associate and baccalaureate degree offerings; and initiatives to strengthen enrollment, retention and student success. The University College encompasses 14 of Penn State's Commonwealth Campuses.

"John brings a strong record of academic leadership and a clear understanding of how to align programs, faculty expertise and partnerships to support student success," said Renata Engel, vice president for Commonwealth Campuses and executive chancellor. "His leadership experience in higher education in Pennsylvania, combined with his work in multi-campus environments, positions him well to advance the work of the University College as it continues to evolve."

In his current role at Louisiana State, Nauright has led interdisciplinary initiatives and supported academic program expansion and external partnerships, including leadership of the college's One Health Initiative and contributions to new program development.

Previously, he served as dean of the Stephen Poorman College of Business, Information Systems and Human Services at Lock Haven University and as director of the institution's Clearfield campus. During his tenure, he contributed to initiatives across the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education focused on workforce development and transfer pathways, while also advancing partnerships across the Commonwealth to enhance student experiences and support regional engagement.

"I am excited to be returning to Pennsylvania and am honored to join the Commonwealth Campuses leadership team," Nauright said. "I look forward to working with faculty, staff and campus leaders to expand opportunities for students across the Commonwealth and beyond."

Nauright holds a doctorate in African history from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and both master's and bachelor's degrees in history from the University of South Carolina. His research has focused on the use of cultural and community assets to support economic development and well-being, as well as issues related to sport and society. He has authored or edited more than two dozen books and more than 150 scholarly publications.
