UC San Diego Holds Steady as Nation’s No. 6 Public University

For the fourth consecutive year, the University of California San Diego has been named the country's sixth best public university by U.S. News & World Report in its annual Best Colleges rankings. UC San Diego also held steady at No. 29 among more than 400 national universities overall - for the third consecutive year.

"Being recognized as the No. 6 public university in the nation, and among the most innovative universities in the country, underscores UC San Diego's role as a catalyst for progress," said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, from the way we tackle global challenges in the lab to how we support our students in the classroom. This recognition affirms our commitment to pushing boundaries and providing the transformative opportunities our students need to create meaningful, real-world impact."

While maintaining its position among public and private national universities, UC San Diego advanced in other Best Colleges rankings, including a four-spot rise - breaking into the top 20 - to No. 19 in the Most Innovative Schools ranking. In the undergraduate computer science program, the artificial intelligence specialty ranking rose 5 spots to No. 8. The undergraduate economics program is now tied for No. 12, moving up 6 spots.

The U.S. News rankings for undergraduate programs in business, computer science, economics, engineering, nursing and psychology are based on peer assessment surveys of deans and senior faculty from accredited U.S. institutions.

Innovation in Action

UC San Diego leads in innovative research with meaningful, real-world impact. The San Diego Supercomputer Center at the Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and Computing recently announced that it will serve as the testbed for a new $8.48 million California Energy Commission-funded project that could transform how AI data centers receive and manage electricity. The project will make SDSC one of the first operational AI data centers in the U.S. to demonstrate a new power architecture designed to reduce energy waste, lower costs and improve grid reliability. Before deployment at SDSC, the technology will undergo extensive testing, including simulations at DERConnect, UC San Diego's National Science Foundation-funded hardware-in-the-loop testbed. Researchers will model AI workloads and grid interactions before introducing the system to a live operating environment.

Advancing AI Education

Artificial intelligence ranked No. 8 nationally among specialty programs, rising five spots from last year. The recognition comes as UC San Diego expands opportunities for students through its undergraduate major in artificial intelligence, preparing graduates to contribute to one of the most transformative fields in society.

In fall 2025, the Jacobs School of Engineering launched the undergraduate AI major after more than a decade of growth in AI teaching and research on campus. This is one of the few AI majors in the U.S. built on a robust computer science foundation that meets the demands of both students and industry. The major is designed to prepare students to build, apply and assess artificial intelligence technologies across disciplines; ground AI studies in societal and professional contexts; and engage students with the ethical questions surrounding these systems and their impact on society.

The undergraduate AI major is housed within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The innovative program draws on expertise from across campus, including other academic departments within the Jacobs School of Engineering and the Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and Computing, reflecting the university's broader emphasis on interdisciplinary research and innovation.

As wildfire risk intensifies and expands, Judson Boomhower's research helps explain how households, insurers and governments can adapt.

Real World Economics

In the undergraduate economics program, ranked No. 12 nationally, leading researchers examine how economic forces shape households, communities and public policy. For instance, Judson Boomhower, associate professor in the Department of Economics at the School of Social Sciences, is a leading researcher on wildfire insurance markets. An expert on the economic costs of climate risk, Boomhower recently coauthored a study showing that households whose homes are destroyed by wildfire experience significant income losses for years after the disaster. His research also examines how insurance markets and public policy can make coverage more available, affordable and responsive for households facing growing climate risk. As wildfire risk intensifies and expands to regions around the world, Boomhower's work helps explain how households, insurers and governments can adapt.

The U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges rankings evaluated more than 1,700 U.S. colleges and universities, using up to 17 measures of academic quality and graduate success.
