WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) sent a letter to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel earlier this month, requesting an investigation into the indictment of Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill by an Orleans Parish grand jury. In the letter, he pointed to the suspicious origin of the case and irregularities with the grand jury's proceedings as necessitating federal review. Read the letter here.

Congressman Higgins' letter was delivered on July 3, 2026, shortly after a Louisiana Supreme Court decision to issue a stay and halt the indictment. The decision cited "disturbing defects in the grand jury proceedings and in the trial court's handling of those proceedings."

"There are significant questions regarding the proper application of the law and whether the Orleans Parish grand jury was righteously convened," wrote Congressman Higgins. "Based upon my objective review of the case, the Orleans Parish grand jury's actions have crossed the threshold of reasonable suspicion."

"FBI New Orleans should conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the grand jury was indeed properly convened, not directed for retaliatory purposes, and not tainted by political motivations," Congressman Higgins continued. "I further encourage the FBI to communicate with the grand jury and the trial court, directing them to preserve all records, documentation, and communications concerning the proceedings at hand."
