VEMO, C40, and The Climate Pledge partner to accelerarte the electric freight transition in Mexico

Mexico City, Mexico - C40 Cities, The Climate Pledge (TCP), and VEMO, a Mexican cleantech company, announced today a strategic alliance that marks a major milestone in a just transition to the electrification of freight transport in Mexico.

  • Laneshift is a pioneering initiative to speed up the shift toward electric vehicle trucks by expanding and strengthening charging infrastructure in Mexico, Brazil, and India.
  • VEMO opened Mexico's largest public multipurpose charging hub in Mexico City and will soon begin a demonstration project in partnership with C40 Cities and The Climate Pledge to test last-mile electric fleets
  • The transport sector accounts for 45% of energy consumption in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City and is the leading source of air pollution, according to the most recent Emissions Inventory of the city.

This alliance will implement, diversify, and scale a network of multipurpose charging hubs, inviting companies of all sizes with electric freight fleets to join a demonstration project as part of the Laneshift Initiative, to develop a charging solution that is responsive to the operational needs of urban electric freight fleets.

In doing so, it supports the city's emissions reduction goals, while delivering positive impacts on urban air quality and public health.

As a TCP signatory, VEMO recently launched a Hub in southern Mexico City - the largest electric vehicle charging hub in the country. Thanks to the partnership, the hub offers spots for light freight vehicles for business, fleet owners, and operators.

Situated in San Antonio-Mixcoac - with direct access to Periférico, Viaducto, and Av. Insurgentes - the hub will provide public charging for electric vehicle fleets, and represents an investment of nearly USD $1 million by VEMO. The Hub will feature a total of 52 fast chargers (90-120 kW) and 104 simultaneous charging points, making it the largest of its kind in Mexico.

"This step marks an evolution in the joint work between VEMO and The Climate Pledge, of which we have been signatories since 2024. Through this alliance, our goal is to ensure that companies with heavy-duty electric fleets have access to reliable and affordable charging infrastructure. We want to remove barriers in daily operations to accelerate the transition toward cleaner, more efficient mobility," said Constantino Rodríguez, Commercial Head at VEMO.

"This type of partnership demonstrates how climate action translates into tangible, ambitious solutions. The pilot project advances the transition to electric fleets and supports the achievement of Mexico City's climate goals. It also improves air quality, generates green jobs, and expands access to charging infrastructure-promoting a diverse and inclusive transition," said Cristina Argudo, Interim Regional Director for Latin America at C40.

"Here at C40, and in collaboration with The Climate Pledge, we are truly excited about this alliance with a signatory company like VEMO. This charging hub is a strategic solution to accelerate electromobility and decarbonize freight transport in the region, making a significant contribution to our objectives," she concluded.

"The commitment of signatories like VEMO underscores the power of cross-sector collaboration to meet the ambition of The Climate Pledge - net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Laneshift-Mexico City helps send necessary demand signals for fast-charging EV infrastructure in the region. The project also aims to incentivize investment and effective policies that support the scale-up of EVs in the transportation logistics sector," said Sarah Dimson-Tararuj, Head of Strategic Projects and Programs, The Climate Pledge-Amazon.

Key facts:

  • C40 estimates 1,890 tCO₂e saved per year
  • Accessible to all types of businesses, from small to large fleets of LDVs and MDVs.
  • This is core to Laneshift's strategy to close infrastructure and financing gaps for electric freight in Mexico.
  • Close to USD $1 million investment [1] [2] [3] by VEMO, with phased operations - first chargers in August 2025 and a second phase by late 2025.
  • Strategic location: San Antonio-Mixcoac, with direct access to major city arteries and key distribution centers.
