Taxpayers have about a month to file their state individual income tax return, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury (Treasury).
State individual income tax returns must be filed electronically or postmarked through the U.S. Postal Service by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15. For more information about e-filing, go to https://www.mifastfile.org.
"We are just about at the halfway point of the filing season," said Deputy State Treasurer Kavita Kale, who oversees Treasury's Revenue Services programs. "Taxpayers still have plenty of time to file their state individual income tax returns. For the most accurate returns, consider electronic filing or using a reputable preparer. Taking time out of your schedule and filing today ensures you receive all the tax credits and deductions you are entitled to receive."
To date, more than 2.4 million returns have been processed, providing more than $1.43 billion in refunds.
For the benefit and convenience of taxpayers, both federal and state of Michigan individual income tax returns are due April 15, 2026. Taxpayers who owe tax must make outstanding payments by April 15, 2026.
"We appreciate the public's patience during this unusually busy period and encourage taxpayers to carefully review their returns before filing to help reduce errors," Kale added.

Allow 4-to-6 weeks from the date you receive your e-filed state tax return confirmation or 6-to-8 weeks from the postmark date on your mailed state tax return to receive your refund. After that timeframe, you can check the status at michigan.gov/wheresmyrefund.

Tax Extension Relief for Southwest Michigan Taxpayers
Individual and business taxpayers in Branch, Cass and St. Joseph counties may request additional time to file state tax returns and pay state tax bills. Penalties and interest will be waived for those who qualify.
This relief follows Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's March 8 declaration of a state of emergency for the three counties to assist with response and recovery efforts. The severe storms and four confirmed tornadoes caused significant damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
The tax extension relief is not automatic. Taxpayers must contact Treasury online, by U.S. Postal Service or phone to request relief.
Details about requesting tax extension relief can be found on Treasury's website.
Tax Tip: Beware of scammers during tax season. The Michigan Department of Treasury does not request payment through gift cards. Text messages are used for communication only after a taxpayer elects that communication method.
